3 Fixes for Facebook Messenger Working Only on Wi-Fi
Paurush dabbles around iOS and Mac while his close encounters are with Android and Windows. Before becoming a writer, he produced videos for brands like Mr. Phone and Digit. On weekends, he is a full-time cinephile trying to reduce his never-ending watchlist, often making it longer.
Basic Fixes
Fix 1: Enable Mobile Data Access
If you use Facebook Messenger mostly on Wi-Fi, the app may not have access to Mobile Data – only natural to do that if you don’t want to spend your mobile data credits. That’s probably why Messenger won’t work on mobile data. You can check and enable the same on your iPhone or Android phone. Here’s how.
On iPhone
OpenSettings > Messenger > Enable Mobile Data.
On Android
OpenMessenger App Info > Mobile data and Wi-Fi > Background Data.
Fix 2: Enable Unrestricted Data Usage/Background App Refresh
If you want to use Data Saver on your Android phone, we suggest disabling it specifically for Facebook Messenger. Similarly, you should enable background app refresh if you have an iPhone.
On Android
OpenMessenger App Info > Mobile data and Wi-Fi > Unrestricted data usage.
On iPhone
OpenSettings > Messenger > Enable Background App Refresh.
Fix 3: Reset Network Settings
If none of the solutions work, the last resort is toreset the network settingson your iPhone and Android. That restores the wireless network settings of your iPhone and Android to the default state and remove every detail you’ve added about your Wi-Fi network. This is an advanced solution and only follow it if none of the methods mentioned above work.
Tip:You can also try to login again to your Facebook account in Messenger as a troubleshooting method. But in case you can’t log in again, refer to our post that lists thebest ways to fix this issue.
