Why Does Telegram Download Stop?

Here are several factors that can cause glitches with Telegram media downloads.

Basic Troubleshooting

Fix 1. Enable Background App Refresh (iPhone)

Ensure that the app has permission to run in the background; otherwise, when you move to another app, the download may pause or completely stop.

Step 1:OpenSettingson your iPhone and scroll toTelegram.

Step 2:Enable theBackground App Refreshtoggle.

Fix 2. Enable Auto-Download Media

Telegram also offers an option toauto-download mediawhen on cellular or Wi-Fi. To enable it, go to Settings. Here’s how.

On iPhone

Step 1:OpenTelegram Settingsand go toData and Storage.

Step 2:From the Automatic Media Download menu, openUsing CellularandUsing Wi-Fiand enableAuto-Download Mediafor both.

On Android

Step 1:Go toTelegram Settingsfrom the hamburger menu at the top left.

Step 2:OpenData and Storageand enableAutomatic media downloadfor both mobile data and Wi-Fi.

Fix 3. Increase Maximum Video Download Size

Users can set the maximum limit for video downloads from the auto-download settings. If you have set a limit of 100MB and the video received in the chat is over 100MB, Telegram won’t start the download process.

You must extend the video download limit from the iPhone and Android app.

On iPhone

Step 1:Go toTelegram Settings→Data and Storage→Automatic Media Download.

Step 2:TapUsing Wi-Fi→Videos. Use the slider and increase the maximum video download size.

On Android

Step 1:OpenTelegram Settings→Data and Storagemenu.

Step 2:TapWhen connected on Wi-Fi→ Videos and increase the video download limit for the Telegram Android app.

Fix 4. Disable Optimized Battery for Telegram

While the feature is dedicated to limiting Telegram animations, autoplay, etc., it may prevent the app from downloading media. You can try disabling the setting and see if the video gets downloaded.

Note: The steps are similar for both iPhone and Android.

Step 1: Open TheTelegramappand go toSettings.

Step 2: Go toPower Savingand slide the slider towardsOff.

If none of the steps work, update the Telegram mobile app and try downloading media files again. If the problem persists, contactTelegram support.

Alternative: Use the Telegram Desktop App

While not ideal, it may help you reach the end game. You can download the app on Mac from the App Store, although for Windows, download fromTelegram’s website. Once downloaded, log in to your account and download the media.
