How to Add Captions (Subtitles) to Instagram Reels and Stories

Enable Auto-Generated Captions to any Reels

This is similar to YouTube subtitles. Instagram recognizes the dialogue in a Reel and displays them as subtitles. Here’s how to turn it on:

Step 1:OpenInstagramand select yourprofile.

Step 2:Tap thehamburger menuand selectSettings.

Step 3:ChooseAccount>Captions.

Step 4:Toggle onCaptions.

To disable captions, follow the same steps and toggle off Captions at the end or tap theauto-generated subtitlesand then tapToggle off Captions.

Get Captions on a Single Reel

If you do not want to add captions to every Instagram Reel, you can enable it for a single Reel.

Note:Currently, you can only use this method on the Reels that come on your feed, not the ones from the Reel button. You can’t use this method when you expand a Reel, either.

Step 1:OpenInstagram.

Step 2:When you see the Reel to add captions, hitthree dotsat the top right corner.

Step 3:TapManage captions.

Step 4:Enable the toggle forCaptions.

How to Add Manual Subtitles to Instagram Reels

Apart from the sticker, you can manually add captions or subtitles to Instagram Reels. However, you cannot edit a particular time frame or for how long a caption should appear. Regardless, here’s how to go about it.

Step 1:OpenInstagramand tap theplus button.

Step 2:ChooseReelfrom the prompt that follows.

Step 3:Record or add a Reel and tapNext.

Step 4:Tap thetext icon (Aa).

Step 5:Add the captions and tapDone. You can now share the reel with your followers.

Turn off Auto-Captions for Your Reels

If you have already added captions to your Reels and don’t want your viewers to have both this and the auto-generated captions, disable that for your Reel. Here’s how:

Step 1:OpenInstagram> navigate to theReelyou want to disable auto-subtitles.

Step 2:Tap thethree dotsat the top right. If you have expanded the Reel, tap thethree dotsat the bottom right.

Step 3:ChooseEdit. If you have expanded the Reel, chooseManage>Edit.

Step 4:TapAdvanced settings.

Step 5:Disable the toggle forShow captions.

Note:This will only be applied to a particular Reel and not all your Reels.

How to Add Captions to Instagram Stories Manually

Step 1:OpenInstagramand press theplusbutton.

Step 2:Record or add astory.

Step 3:Tap theAa icon.

Step 4:Add thecaptionsand tapDone.

Step 4:Next, tap the>button to upload the story.

FAQs

You can’t add subtitles to a video without English audio, as Instagram only supports live captions for Reels with English audio. Also, ensure your account supports Caption stickers.

To use captioning on Instagram, your app should be updated to the latest version. This feature is relatively new and will be gradually rolled out to everyone.
