Method 1: Using the Info Option in the Files App

The Files app on your iPhone gives you ready access to files stored iniCloud Driveand other third-party cloud storage services. It also displays files created by certain apps (Word, Pages, etc.) that use local storage. You may use it to find file types by following the steps below.

Step 1:Launch theFile app.

Step 2:Long-tap on thefileyou need > tapGet info.

Step 3:The format should now bedisplayed under theKindcategory in theInformationsection. Once you’ve done this, tapDone.

However, certain apps on the iPhone, such as the native Photos app, won’t provide access to their files via the Files app. Consider sharing the document or image to a location within the Files app (ideally to theOn My iPhone location). You can then check its format by long-pressing on it and tappingGet info.

Method 2: Configuring File App to Always Show File Formats

While the above method will help you find file types for individual files, you may configure the File app to display file formats by default as soon as you open the app. Let’s show you how.

Step 1:Launch theFilesapp.

Step 2:Tap theMoreicon >three dotsat the top right > tapKind.

Step 3:Now, return to the previous interface, and all files’ formats and names will be displayed.

Note that you can alwayschange the file type extension on your iPhone.
