How to Convert DOCX to Google Docs
There are multiple ways to convert a DOCX file to Google Doc format.
Method 1. Upload to Word Doc and Convert to Google Docs
Step 1:OpenGoogle Drive, navigate to the location where you want to upload the DOCX file, and right-click a vacant area. On the context menu, selectUpload Files.
Step 2:Select theDOCX fileyou want to upload and clickOpen.
Step 3:Right-click the uploaded DOCX document, point toOpen With, and selectGoogle Docs.
Step 4:Open theFilemenu > selectSave as Google Docs.
Google Docs will convert the file to the GDOC format and open it in a new tab. The web app will also save the file to the same location as the original DOCX file.
Method 2. Upload and Open DOCX file in Google Docs
Step 1:OpenGoogle Docs. Then, click the Open file picker icon on the Home screen.
Step 2:Switch to theUploadtab and clickSelect a file from your device.
Step 3:Select the DOCX file and clickOpen.
Google Docs should upload the file, convert it to the Google Docs format, and then open it.
Step 4:Click theMoveicon and specify a location to save the converted GDOC file.
Otherwise, Google Docs will save the file to the root folder of Google Drive.
Unlike the previous method, Google Docs will not keep a copy of the original DOCX file in Google Drive.
Method 3. Turn a Word Document to a Google Docs
If you’ve already uploaded a DOCX file to Google Drive, you can simply locate it in Google Drive. Then, you can perform the conversion by opening the file via Google Docs itself. Follow the below steps.
Step 1:OpenGoogle Docs. On the web app’s home screen, click theOpen file pickericon.
Step 2:Switch to theMy Drivetab, locate the DOCX file you want to convert, and clickOpen.
Step 3:ClickOpenWithon the document preview window and selectGoogle Docs.
Step 4:Open theFilemenu and clickSave as Google Docs.
Google Docs will immediately convert the DOCX file to the GDOC format and save it to the root folder of Google Drive, even if the original file is located elsewhere.

How to Convert DOCX to Google Docs on Mobile
If you use the Google Docs mobile app on Android or iOS, you must upload the file to the Google Drive app first. If you’ve already done that, start from Step 4 instead.
Step 1:Open theGoogle Drivemobile app and go to thelocationwhere you want to upload the DOCX file.
Step 2: Tap theNewicon. On the menu that shows up, tapUpload.
Step 3:TapBrowse, navigate to thelocationof the DOCX file, and then tap it to start uploading.
Step 4:Tap the uploaded DOCX file to open it in Google Docs. Follow by tappingMore(three-dotted menu) at the upper-right corner of the opened document.
Step 5:Tap the notice labeledOffice Compatibility Mode. On the following screen, tapSave as Google Docs.
Wait for the app to finish converting the file. After that, head back into the Google Docs Home screen. You should see the converted GDOC document at the top of the recently opened file list.
