How to Fix Messenger Video Calls Not Working on Windows 11

Basic Fixes

FIX 1: Allow Browser or Messenger App to Access the Microphone and Camera

You can’t make video calls through Messenger if the browser through which you’re accessing it doesn’t have access to your device’s microphone and camera. Here’s how to grant Google Chrome the necessary permissions:

Step 1:OpenGoogle Chrome> click thethree dots iconat the top-right corner > chooseSettings.

Step 2:SelectPrivacy & securityfrom the left sidebar > chooseSite settingsfrom the right.

Step 3:Under the Permissions section, chooseCamera.

Step 4: Select theSites can ask to use your cameraoption.

Step 5:Return to the Site settings window and selectMicrophone.

Step 6:Select theSites can ask to use your microphoneoption.

Similarly, you should give camera and microphone permission to any other browser you use.

If you’re using theMessenger desktop app, follow these steps to provide it access to camera and microphone:

Step 1:Open theSettings menuby using the Windows + I key > selectPrivacy & securityfrom the left sidebar > chooseCamerafrom the right.

Step 2:Enable the toggle forMessenger.

Step 3:Return to the Privacy & security window and choose theMicrophoneoption.

Step 4:Turn on theMessengertoggle.

FIX 2: Grant Necessary Permissions to Facebook Website

Ensure that Messenger and the Facebook website have permission to access your device’s camera and microphone. To check this in Chrome, follow these steps:

Step 1:Open theChrome Settings menu> click onPrivacy & securityin the left sidebar > selectSite settings.

Step2:ChooseCameraand verify that the Facebook or Messenger website is not present under theNot allowed to use your camerasection.

Step 3:If either website is listed, click on it and selectAllowfor theCameraandMicrophoneoptions.

FIX 3: Change Default Camera and Microphone

If you have an externalmicrophoneor camera attached to your computer, ensure your browser is using the correct camera and microphone for the video call. Here’s how to verify this on Chrome:

Step 1:Open theChrome Settings menu> selectPrivacy & security>Site settings>Camera.

Step 2:Click on thedrop-down menuand select the camera you wish to use.

Step 3:Return to the Site settings window again > chooseMicrophone> select themicrophoneyou wish to use from the drop-down menu.
