How to Fix “Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed” Error

Fix 1: Restart the Windows Installer Service

If theWindows Installer serviceglitches and stops working on your Windows PC, you will have trouble installing any program. To fix it, restart the service manually.

Step 1:Press the Windows key, searchServices, and click to open it.

Step 2:LocateWindows Installer, right-click it, and selectRestart.

Fix 2: Reset the Windows Installer Service

If restarting the service doesn’t resolve the issue, you can reset it manually using a registry file. Before you begin, back up the Windows registry in theRegistry Editor appusing File > Export.

Step 1:Press the Windows key, searchNotepad, and click to open it.

Step 2:Paste the below code in the Notepad file, pressCtrl + Shift + Sto open Save As, set Save as type toAll files, and name itResetWI.reg.

Step 3:Double-click the created registry file (ResetWI.reg) and selectYeswhen prompted to modify the Windows registry.

Fix 3: Rename the msiexec File

msiexec, a core component of Windows Installer, controls the reading and installation of a file package. If a duplicate msiexec file exists on your system, it can prevent the Windows Installer from launching. Here’s how you can fix it:

Step 1:Press theWindows + E shortcutto open File Explorer, copy-paste the below path in the address bar, and pressEnter.

Step 2:Locate themsiexecfile in the list, press theF2 key, and rename it tomsiexec.old.

Step 3:Finally,restartthe Windows Installer service as demonstrated in Fix 1 above.

Fix 4: Re-Register the Windows Installer

If you are facing installation issues even after modifying the registry, you must re-register the Windows Installer using the Command Prompt.

Step 1:Press theWindows key, searchCommand Prompt, and click onRun as administrator.

Step 2:Approve the UAC prompt and copy-paste the following commands to execute them sequentially. Then,restartyour PC.

Fix 5: Repair Corrupt System Files to Fix the Windows Installer Service

Lastly, corrupt system files can prevent the Windows Installer from functioning properly. Repair it by running the SFC and DISM scans torestore the Windows image.

Step 1:Open theCommand Promptwith administrative permissions.

Step 2:Typesfc /scannowand pressEnter.

Step 3:Finally, execute the following DISM commands sequentially and reboot your Windows 11 PC.
