How to Search Pictures by Faces in Google Photos

Note:We’ve written instructions for the Google Photos app on iPhone, however, they remain the same for the Android and the web apps as well.

How to Enable Face Grouping on Google Photos

Step 1:Open Google Photos and tap on youraccount iconat the top right corner. Tap onGoogle Photos Settings.

Step 2:Tap onPreferences>Group similar faces.

Step 3:Turn on the toggle forFace Groups.You can also find pets by their faces if you enableShow pets with people.

Google Photos will now scan theuploaded library of photosand group photos by faces that are recurring in images.

Step 4:To find photos by faces, go to theSearchtab from the bottom bar. Tap onView allunder People & pets.

Step 5:You will see all the faces Google Photos has recognized and view the photos they appear in. You can tap onAdd Namebelow the face.

Step 6: Enter the namein the search bar – if you find a contact with the name, tap on thecontactto link it with the face. If not, type the name in the search bar and tap onDoneto rename the face.

How to Add New Faces on Google Photos

Google Photos will only feature faces that appear in more than a single photo. Therefore, if you want to add a face from a new picture,swipe upfrom the photo and tap onEditnext to People.

Select the face you want to add, tap on thePlus iconon the next screen, and then tap onCreateto add the face.

How to Hide a Face on Google Photos

If you want to hide a face that Google Photos has recognized, open theSearchtab and tap onView allto see all faces. Tap on thethree dotsicon > selectHide and Showfaces > tap on all the faces you want to hide > selectDone.

To unhide any faces, scroll till the end on theHide & Show Facesscreen and tap on the hidden faces to unhide them.
