How to Stop Chrome From Opening Old Tabs at Startup

Fix 1: Disable Continue Where You Left Off

Chrome has a built-in option that continues your previous browsing session exactly from where you left it. You may have accidentally turned this feature on, and while that’s highly unlikely, let’s get it out of the way before proceeding to other fixes.

Fix 2: Disable Homepage in Chrome Mobile

Disabling the homepage button in Chrome Mobile effectively hides the homepage functionality. This can be handy when old tabs keep opening. Follow the steps below.

Step 1:Launch theChrome browseron your Android device.

Step 2:Tap thethree dotsat the top right corner > tapSettings.

Step 3:Scroll down within the Settings menu until you find theAdvancedsection, then tap onHomepage, and toggle off the option.

Fix 3: Disable Chrome in the Background

Chrome doesn’t fully shut down when you exit it. You may have noticed this since you still receivenotifications on your system trayfrom websites and extensions even when Chrome appears closed. This functionality may stop old tabs from reloading automatically at startup.

Step 1:Launch the Chrome browser.

Step 2:Enter the path below in the address bar and hitEnter.

Step 3:Turn off the toggle forContinue Running Background Apps When Google Chrome is Closed.

Restart Chrome. If the issue was caused by Chrome running in the background, older tabs will not open at startup.
