What Happens on Using Free Up Space in Google Photos?

Whenever you use the Free Up Space option in Google Photos, all photos and videos safely backed up to the cloud are removed from your device’s local storage.

Note:If photos are uploading in compressed quality, using the Free Up Space option deletes the original quality photos from your device, leaving only the compressed versions on Google Photos. Changethe upload qualityto original if you want to back up high-quality photos.

How to Get Photos Back After Freeing Up Space

You can always open the photo on Google Photos, swipe up, and use theDownloadoption. The photo will download to the local storage on your device.

How to Free Up Space on Google Photos

Open Google Photos > tap on yourprofile iconat the top right > use theFree up spaceoption > allow Google Photos to delete photos from your device.

If your device moves deleted photos to aTrash/Recently Deletedfolder, clear it to delete the photos from your device permanently.

If you don’t want to delete all backed-up photos from your device at once, delete photos individually. Swipe up on an image and select theDelete From Deviceoption.
